Get Your Swedish Personal Number & BankID Early

To access healthcare, open a bank account, sign rental contracts, or use everyday digital services like Swish, you’ll need two things:

  • Swedish Personal Number (Personnummer): Apply through the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket) as soon as you arrive. It’s your key to most official systems, from healthcare to employment.
  • BankID: Once you have your personal number and a Swedish bank account, you can get BankID – a secure digital ID used for banking, signing documents, and logging in to countless services.
